2016 Media Awards Summary-

Firstly, My best video was Abdullas thrift shop, followed by Exposure and My City. I found these my favourite as they have all grab my attention due to the themes behind it.

The reason why Thrift Shop was my favourite was due to the editing on it. The way the camera was spinning was almost if you were hypnotised into the screen. The amount of movement and different scenery kept me interested as it was all edited in one.

Exposure was filmed in a great way with different views of angles of the gun which made the hitman look very dominant. The black and white gave it a old school effect which was kinda scary and the fact that the character with the gun had no emotion on his face gave it more of a serious thriller.

My city seemed abit like fast and furious with the way the city was out and the sports car. I found it interesting how the camera angle focused on the car driving proper fast. The fact that it switched to the gas metre gave it more of a racing type of movie which grabbed my attention even more.

Extension Task-
1- Choose from two extracts from different eras (e.g. one from the 1940s and one from 1990s) and analyse the cinematography
what are the key differences?

From the first extract we can see that the major difference is the colour. The first one is in black and white whilst the second is in colour. The first one uses more medium or close up shots due to the quality of the cameras back then. However the second does the same but in more of an advanced way. This shown when the character looks straight into the computer and can see the reflection of his face upon it. The first one uses different areas whereas the second is based in one room. There is a difference in the way the clips have been filmed due to the intensity of the scene compared to the more relaxed.

Part 2 -

This film still taken from James bond is a medium close up shot focused in the mean determined loom of the character. It has an effect as we can we see what the character is doing with hands and yet see the close look on his facial expressions.

This film still includes an over the shoulder angle. We can see this as we see the back of one character yet the front of the opposing one. it gives an effect as it only wants to show focus on one character who is probably the main.

This shot on Liam Neeson is a clsoe up shot mainly focusing on the eyes and the battle scars of the character all over his face. It has an effect as it shows what he has been through yet still has the eyes of a fighter and that he is not weakened yet.

This 1st person shot of a war movie brings you into life. It makes you feel like you are the character so it makes the scene more intense as it is a war scene. It puts you in the shoes of the actor.

Sound Work

The sound bridges in this scene are very evident as it may even seem like it's not there, an example of this is when the protagonist running after the criminal then the camera cuts onto another subject you could notice the sound bridge. The diagetic sound has a captivating effect that is attention grabbing as there is a discussion that is taking place. The glass smashing and the people fighting has a domestic effect that allows the audience to be attracted to the fight. The non-diagetic sound is just as attention-grabbing as the diagetic sound as it has a dramatic effects.

Comparison

Jasmit's Video
Jasmit used interesting instrumentals. There were many different areas inside the video and the use of different instrumentals suited the whole video.

Abdullah's Video
There is an creative example of contrapuntal music as the use of the instrumental was intriguing. The star wars was also good as the tone of the instrumental had a connection with the overall video. He has also used a good example for the parallel sound as the music was relevant with the overall purpose of the video clip.

Kendra's Video
The audience wants to know what is going to happen. This video has a warmth that captivates the audience. It had an effect that captivated our attention as there were many enigma codes.

Everyone had an pleasant overview of the whole video as the video showed different use of Media techniques.

Extension Lighting- Film Noir Lighting

The low-key lighting is used to create a  harsh contrast between the light and dark lighting. This is also called the chiaroscuro effect. This is effective as in the background the lighting of the silhouette is magnified and more prominent as it covers up the identity of the antagonisthe blind effect emphasises the light and shadow. This leaves a detective sort of feel which links to film noir. It also foreshadows a tragic or scary event. The fact that the edges are gloomy means that everything is closing in on the character who is strapped up to the chair. The light on the victims face shows the fear and anxiety of what is to come.
Again here we see low-key lighting being used which is very common in Film Noir scenes. The lighting focuses on the soon to be victims face, leaving this deadly shadow of the antagonist holding a knife behind her back. Back lighting is used here in order to create this dark figure which gives you the chills looking at it due to the fact a murder is prone to happen.

Task 3- The man who fell to earth

Question 1- What do we learn about the character from the way he relates to his environment?
From this glimpse of the movie, it is obvious to see the main character had no understanding of what he was around and it all seemed a bit puzzling. The facial expressions give it off completely that he is feeling this sort of way. The clothing on him rubs off a scary impression on him but in more of a mysterious way. Whether this is associated with death we do not know but throughout the scene it is clear to see how repentant he is so death could be an answer to that. Also the near danger around him could represent karma or that something isn't going that right for him. The ending action shows the character begins to become comfortable with his new surroundings.

Question 2- What expectations do we have of the genre and narrative of the film?
The major expectation this glimpse gives off is that it is clearly a sci-fi film due to the rare chance of someone falling to earth. However the new surroundings means it is a whole new world for the character and to gain confidence he will need to have an understanding and this is where an adventurous side kicks in.

Extension Task-   1-
Get Rich or Die Tryin

From this glimpse of an image, the main props involved is a gun. Clearly we can see this is an action/crime film. The costume is a black jacket with a grey hoodie which suggest he is thick layered. This means he is expecting damage done to his body so he is prepared. The leather gloves means that something illegal is going on as he is not trying to get traced, especially with the fact there is one hand out and one hand pointing the gun. The facial expression is screwed with one eye brow up suggesting anger in his eyes and that he wants something done for him otherwise something bad will kick off. Judging by the background, this robbery could be somewhere quiet or illegal so it is unnoticed.
